T.M.NTM |
|
| |
T.M.NTM
-a new
musical notes specialized for young children. It enables them to play
tunes within a short
period of time (several hours). The
method is very
easy to comprehend and is an enjoyable and creative
way of learning to
play, while at the very same time developing language-reading skills.
The notation system
is made up of a small number of forms
easily
distinguished from one another, thus facilitating the child’s
learning
process.

The
idea standing behind the T.M.NTM method |
|
| |
Scientific studies have proven to show, that first
language reading
skills are the the most difficult to acquire, while the reading of any additional
language learnt is easier. Accordingly, when musical notation is the
first language the reading of which is being taught,
the child obtains
the basics of reading and the learning process of reading the child’s
mother tongue becomes much easier for him or her, as it is already the
second language acquired.

The field results |
|
|
The results' illustration shows details of the high influence of music reading on the textual reading:
|
|
|
 |
|
|
Vocal
reading – The percentage of the words that were read
correctly out of 66 words.
Acquired reading behaviors
– The average percentage of valid reading strategies that were applied
by
the children.
Fluent
textual reading -
The percentage of children who read a given text fluently and without
any
mistakes, hesitation, repetitions or
skipping.
Success
in reading words
- The percentage of children who successfully deciphered new and
unfamiliar
words that they were given, and
automatic reading of
familiar words without mistakes. |

For
whom is the method suitable? |
|
| |
The T.M.NTM method
is compatible to children aged 5 to 8 (in pre-school or first grade),
who are standing
before or in the process of learning to
read their
first language. Since music is a universal language, children
from all
over the world, regardless of the language they speak, can easily
relate to the T.M.NTM method.

The
Origin of the T.M.NTM method |
|
| |
The T.M.NTM method
(patent –pending) was developed by Dr. Yehudit Carmon, an expert on
literacy
education for young children and a
Master of Musicology
(MMus), who holds many years of experience in
teaching.
Dr. Carmon analyzed reading faculties
and pinpointed those skills that
transfer from first to second reading.
Based on her findings, she then
developed the T.M.NTM method.
This method enables the child to initially
acquire the basic reading
elements, using the music language, and then to expand those very
components
when learning how to read the child‘s
mother tongue. The
method was tested successfully in schools and
kindergartens and proved
to be highly efficient in developing and improving children’s reading
skills.

Introducing the method: |

|
 |
|
| |
Methodology |
|
| |
An annual T.M.NTM
enrichment program -- which is based on four fundamentals:
|
| The
Teacher - a qualified music instructor giving personal
attention to each and every pupil.
|
The book
- exposing the child to first reading experience by
practicing it with an especially
designed/formatted
booklet.
|
| The
musical instrument - actual playing practice and
enjoyment of an immediate outcome.
|
The
Computer Game - individually playing and accumulating
prizes on a unique
educational
computer game - "The House of SoundsTM".
|
| |
These
fundamentals, in addition to the small learning groups, the learning
strategies, and the very use of
music in the T.M.NTM method - help
the child reach a high readiness level for reading in kindergarten and
first grade. |
|
|
| |
 |
|
| |
The
material taught consists of the following: |
|
| |
Segmentation to syllables; familiarizing with
sounds and their symbolic
representations; the experience of
reading notes; discriminating
between sound pitches and durations; the experience and enjoyment of
playing
tunes and writing music, etc.
|

Skills
& faculties that T.M.NTM develops |
|
| | |
| |
·
Reading
skills such as: Auditory memory; comprehending the alphabetical
principle; accumulating and
combining
data into meaning.
· Musical skills
such as: Discriminating between sound pitches and durations.
· Social
and Emotional skills such as: Self-esteem;
Self-confidence; Teamwork.

Musicality |
|
| |
The T.M.NTM method
is based on the child’s natural development, which includes much
exposure to played
and sung sounds. The use of music for
the nurture
and development of cognitive, social and emotional skills
is widely
known and demonstrated. In T.M.NTM, the
many virtues of music are channeled into a distinct
development of
reading skills.

 |
|
| |
Individual
and intuitive work |
|
| |
T.M.NTM
method
enables the individual work of every child, paying the greatest
possible attention to his or
her level and optimal advancement rate.
The aiding materials and music booklets are orientated for use with
musical instruments and for
play-and-sing repetition practice. This
format leads the child to make the
transition from the concrete (finger
playing) to the abstract (singing), all in consideration of his or her
natural
development stage, and the learning
process offers the child
enjoyment, gratification and motivation to
practice reading. Rapid
individual advancement is also important for building the child’s
self-confidence and
self-esteem, which in turn contribute
to this
motivation.
|
|
| |
 |
|
| |
Creativity
and self-expression |
|
| |
T.M.NTM
method
encourages creativity and self-expression: Working individually or in
small groups allows
the child to exercise self-expression
and develop
teamwork skills, while promoting listening and patience
towards other
children.
|
|
| |
 |
|
| |
Integrative
brain exercise |
|
| |
T.M.NTM
method integrates
between both parts of the brain: The left hemisphere which is
responsible for
linguistic faculties and analytic
thinking, together
with the right hemisphere – that emotional and intuitive side
of the
brain, which is also attributable to music and musicality. This
integration helps the child achieve
maximal coordination and enjoyment
in the process of playing and learning.
|
|
| |
 |
|
| |
Fun
practice and motivation |
|
| |
In practicing the T.M.NTM method, the child very quickly
succeeds in recognizing and playing familiar tunes.
The enjoyment and
instant gratification in recognizing tunes while playing them,
constitutes a positive
reading-comprehension experience for
the child.
The easiness in which the child reaches achievements,
stimulates his or
her motivation to read and play.
